The Best Way to Deal with a Hazard

The most important step that needs to be taken in order to maintain a safe workplace is the analysis and assessment of hazards. However, all hazards cannot be addressed at one time because of resource limitations. Fortunately, risk assessments can always be used to establish certain priorities, so that the most dangerous hazards are addressed first and those least likely to occur can be considered later.

One of the best ways to fix or deal with a hazard is to get rid of it altogether. Unfortunately, this is not always possible. But, as an employer, one can always take certain steps to make sure that the effect of these hazards are less dangerous. Present below is a list of ways in which an employer can deal with a likely hazard:

Elimination: For instance, workers can clean high windows from the ground with extendable rod cleaners rather than by climbing a sky-high ladder and risking a fatal fall.

Substitution: For example, an employer can provide workers with non-toxic glue instead of toxic glue.

Isolation: This process primarily involves separating the hazard from people by fitting screens or putting up safety barriers.

Safeguards: Safeguards can be added by modifying fitting guards to machinery tools or equipment.

Instructing workers to carry out their work in the safest way possible: This means developing and enforcing safe work procedures.

Using personal protective equipment and clothing: For instance, workers must use safety glasses, gloves, helmets and ear muffs.
